TennCare is Tennessee’s Medicaid program. It provides healthcare coverage to many low‑income individuals and families, including pregnant women, parents or caretakers of a minor child, children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
You can apply for TennCare anytime, but you must meet specific income and sometimes resource limits to qualify.
Who Can Qualify for TennCare?
TennCare has several eligibility groups, and each group has its own income rules. Some groups also have limits on what you own — called resources — such as bank accounts, vehicles, or land. Your household size also affects eligibility.
Here are some of the groups TennCare Medicaid covers:
Children under age 21
Pregnant women
Parents or caretakers of a minor childThe child must live with you and be a close relative
Individuals needing treatment for breast or cervical cancer
People receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
Individuals who have received both an SSI check and a Social Security check in the same month at least once since April 1977 and still receive Social Security
A person who:Lives in a medical institution (such as a nursing home) and has income below $2,829 per month, orReceives long‑term care services paid for by TennCare
